Why understanding the different paradigms with mental health is useful for understanding stuff

Black men are overdiagnosed with schizophrenia in the us and uk by about a factor of 3 compared to their white counterparts. Overdiagnosis of schizophrenia is true for all black people, as is the overuse of section and forced treatment in the community.

This is.a really significant thing at policy level. The psychiatric profession could easily be accused of being racist. I don't think that's strictly true. What's true is the system, in practice, often enforces local norms of behaviour. In the West Indies the problem does not exist because psychiatrists there have different norms and may use different diagnostic methods.

So much is subjective and this example is where the subjectivity shows clear. Is subjectivity racism? That's a different question.

This is what I do

I'm escaping my life. I'm in one of my ostrich in the sand places. My head is in the sand.

All I do is drink red wine, smoke skunk and write in this park near where I live for a few hours a day.

I don't want to deal with real life any more. I know I have to but I don't want to.

So I come here and rant. It is better than sitting at home playing shitty facebook games. Most of my electronic contact is through a game called galalxy legion.

I escape into my blogging on mental health or I escape into these simple social network browser-based games.

I want things but I'm not getting any of them done. Really struggling to do anything else but this routine.

I have no idea what this state is, whether it is clinically diagnoseable or treatable. I just need to get on with it.

A society malformed and the malformation constructed as an illness

What do you call a culture which isn't designed to be used by people. Why ill of course.

The social disability comes from a misalignment after the Industrial Revolution. The vagries of the human condition were medicalised. The mad were locked up abnd hiding for generations. Society became misformed to advantage robot like people. Those who were mentally different or behaved different were hidden from view. As children grew to adults they forgot the mad existed. That is the scary part. How an act of compassion turned out to be the cause of so much future malformation. As the asylums were created so the illness in society took hold.

Those who were not hidden from view had their ways modified, or attempted to. Society demanded adherence to automoton behaviours and individuals found a new church to replace the systems of old laid waste by reason and science.

Psychiatrys greatest trick was the application of science to temporary and localised cultural and social prejudice. This is the fundamental reason who psychiatry is a pseudoscience.

Why is it so bad that science is misapplied? Because science is the new dogma of the system which replaced the power and truth system of religion. God's voice is replaced by a systematic review.

And so as science advanced the people still believed behavioural health was founded on scientific principles. It isn't. Otherwise there'd be a large body of work in psychosanology - wellness of the mind. Thered be work understanding the interplay of psychopathology and psychosanology.

The mad themselves are subjugated by the paradigm of illness and the methods of well intentioned psychuiatrists. They are just like the ones a century ago who pathologised homosexuality. This was temporalily considered abnormal and the engine of psychiatry subjugated homosexuals as mentall ill. They helped them to change out of compassion just like they help the mad to be like automotons.

It is compassionate because in a fucked up society those who are of different types do less worse. It is the developed world nations which are ill. Their systems and cultures have been malformed. The WhO IPSS data shows just how true this is.

The malformation is responsible for a significant part of the social disability. It is laws like the Disability Discrimination Act which try to heal the ill but the ill is far gone and there are no true society doctors.

The illness means our human race loses out. Our progress has always been fettered by systems which treat those who are equally able less favourably simply because they're different. The value to our society is lost as experiences which create wisdom and passion are medicated away. Experience of emotional pain is called an illness because robots are considered the norm. The cycle of life is little understood. Creativity and expression are traded for cheap docility.

The price of the illness in society is also death. Many have died or been tortured all in the name of behavioural health. There is not oversight sufficient to stop the butchery.

The system isn't about distress

None of the science which goes into training and commissioning is about distress. Or almost none. A century of fighting and the movement for the recognition of the scale of psychological distress...which I'm sort of shifting to people based measures...after all, psychological distress is another cheeky fucking way to create a hegemony for psychologists and mental health campaigners.

Fuck the bullshit. Fuck the waste of scientific endeavour. Where is our democracy in that the most important of questions: what of the human condition?

The movement towards open source ideas

Open source, if you don't mean it, is another last bastion of freedom. Freedom of ideas, and work.

Open source is a computer software term. People give time, work and expertise for something they often gain no reward for. Those that do get a salary in big companies. A small recompense for significant discoveries in computer science and electronic engineering.

Many are idealists and many make a contribution to the open source movement. It exists for many reasons but one of those is that ideas are free. And so is knowledge.

These are ideals. Knowledge is free and ideas are owned by all because this is human progress. Humanity will progress faster without the inhibitors allowed by modern constructs.

One is the ownership of ideas. They're not. They're open source. Free. To be edited. To be criticised and corrected.

They're open source because that's how great ideas are made.

Failure in a way...about flourishing

Or what is mental health?

I didn't get an important concept in the UK's New Horizons mental health strategy. I'm dumb too often. Dr Jo Nurse brought forward a new but old concept in mental health. She put words to something implicit but unexpressed. The realisation of potential. For her I assume conceptually the word meant to society. I would extend that thought a little further. I would not quality with the value to society bit. The refinement is not apt. The value to the individual is relelvant. Scientifically at least. Because the judgements surrounding the decision between principle of society and value, even if it is just in 2011, or the value of the diversity of the individual. Well that ain't science.

The schools of thought would use science to argue their case. And this was something I was part of. Jo nurse's theory was met with resistance from one organisation. They'd forgtten old conceptualisations such as the dual continua which I helped reference and be noted in new horizons. But the criticism was valid. While naming yet another thing within peoples understanding of mental health the new strategy did little for the mentally ill. They will always be subudgated and repressed. It is the vert bature of the result of the application of the paradigm of illness.

40-80 chemicals involved in the high

Cannabis is so interesting. Legal psychoactives work with one chemical usually. This one chemical can effect upon lots of biological systems.

But this is an organic high, not a chemical one offered by psychiatry. Rather than a high dose of one many interact.

Not one but many. Delta-9-thc is just one of those. It is one of the three isomers of thc if I remember my science right.

Not one but many. This concept seems to be repeating.

About Me

We It comes in part from an appreciation that no one can truly sign their own work. Everything is many influences coming together to the one moment where a work exists. The other is a begrudging acceptance that my work was never my own. There is another consciousness or non-corporeal entity that helps and harms me in everything I do. I am not I because of this force or entity. I am "we"
