Only a fool tries to try to predict the progress of mental health and technology.
Let me try and predict the progress of mental health and technology.
First of all, technology covers many things. It covers the stuff like doors and nuclear families with 2.4 children as well as mobile phones and electric cars.
Social technology is a...well someone else must be studying it. Sociologists I expect, but sociologists are like physicists. They're all about science and abstract concepts.
They're not engineers. Engineers put what physicists come up with to good use. They make it practical and applicable to every day life. While physicists are off looked for the Higgs Boson engineers are making better nuclear reactors.
Who applies social technology? Where does social theory get applied and how?
Engineers have been around for decades turning mad science into silicon chips and the internet. Where are the social engineers shifting the constructs of modern society to achieve social progress?
In a sense they're campaigners and activists. These people usually don't use science though. They don't directly apply the theories. They just do stuff.
In social science the academics do one thing and in activism individuals do something else. Social engineering doesn't exist. In fact the word itself is a hacking term.
Social engineering would be a very dangerous game. If there was a profession or a power structure then it would essentially superseed governemnt and exist outside the law. But people engineering has done this. Psychiatry has played god on so many people's lives. The mistakes of psychiatry are perhaps why social engineers shouldn't exist. But with the existance of psychiatry already tearing apart human progress there is a desperate need for social engineers, or applied sociologists or whatever, to counter the mistake of mental health.
