Figures from the Department of Work and pensions so far are only for new
claimants (so all the people on incapacity benefit who are about to get
moved onto ESA aren't included in these). They are for anyone who is
turning up having just started claiming on the basis of disability.
So far:
66% of people are found fit for work
24% are put in the work related activity group (that this will affect)
10% are in the support group
Of the 66% found fit, 32% appeal this decision. 40% of these appeals are
found in favour of the claimant.
To put it in context for mental illness, 33% of all people who get ESA
get it for a 'mental or behavioural disorders'.
It is now more important than ever that the work capability assessment
(that test which decides which group you get in to) actually assesses
accurately.
"
So if my maths is right only 20% of all new claimants get into the
support group. That's really not a lot.
