Regulation of unregulated psychotherapies

So there's a push at the moment for the regulation of
psychotherapists. There's a movement and a salient argument against the
regulation of psychotherapists too.

But there's something else. What about non-evidence based
psychotherapies. One example would be Dianetics. It's a therapy
developed by science fiction author and religious leader L Ron Hubbard
and it's fundamental to Scientology. I'm actually learning more about it
at the moment.

The therapy is similar to another psychotherapy from the same era and
Hubbard acknowledgegs Freud.. Hubbard tried to get two papers published
by the American Psychiatric Association but they weren't of suitable
quality so he went ahead and promoted it anyway.

It's widely used but has no evidence based I'm aware of. It's
unregulated by the secretive organisation know as the Church of
Scientology. But who regulates them?

In fact there are many organisations that offer life transformation-type
psychotherapies. Tony Robbins is one example. I've tried the Landmark
Forum - http://www.landmarkeducation.co.uk/ - which is a Canadian life
development and transformations course that can havee a significant
impact on people's lives. The trainers are essentially group therapists.
They call it 'training' but the experience is about similar objectives
to what people want from a psychotherapy. The methods they use are mixed
and there are some amazing transformations that happen during the 3 day
course I did with them. It also has features of a cult with people
spouting Landmark's language and becoming programmed to the dogma.

It's really a question of what the definition is of a psychotherapy and
a psychotherapist. An broad definition may be closer to the truth and to
the aims of regulation of people and organisations who have the power of
psychotherapists.

About Me

We It comes in part from an appreciation that no one can truly sign their own work. Everything is many influences coming together to the one moment where a work exists. The other is a begrudging acceptance that my work was never my own. There is another consciousness or non-corporeal entity that helps and harms me in everything I do. I am not I because of this force or entity. I am "we"
